Why use an independent lighting designer?

Lighting design and working with light is a complex business. To be effective requires not only specialist knowledge of the nature of light, but an understanding of how it affects perception, appreciation and wellbeing. The lighting designer also needs an understanding of the basics or architecture, space-planning, interior design and electrical engineering.

Lighting knowledge is not exclusive to lighting designers. Everyone involved in a building project will know a little about lighting, the architect, the interior designer, the AV specialist, the contractor, even the client. However, with technology evolving apace, these bits of knowledge may be overlapping, inconsistent and leave gaps through which a well-considered design may fall.

People operating outside of their main field of expertise are in danger of missing opportunities due to gaps in their knowledge that they may not appreciate that they have. As a specialist, the lighting designer, who works exclusively in lighting, will have a greater depth of knowledge and be far less likely to be miss opportunities and avoid pitfalls. Architects and interior designers appreciate this, which is why we are often employed directly by them as part of their design team.

What does a lighting designer bring to the party?

FLAIR. Having a full knowledge of the capabilities of his toolbox and a wealth of experience, the lighting designer can offer imaginative solutions that he knows are achievable.

EXPERIENCE. The lighting designer will have worked on a wealth of projects across many sectors.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE. You will be aware of major technological changes in lighting and lighting controls over recent years, for example the arrival and development of LED light sources, new opportunities in colour and control and wireless technology. The lighting designer will keep abreast of new developments through trade journals, exhibitions and industry contacts.

MARKET KNOWLEDGE. The lighting designer will use their relationships with major manufacturers and an 'ear to the ground' to keep up to date with new product developments and trends.

REGULATORY KNOWLEDGE. There are regulations, standards and 'best practice' guidelines covering energy saving, light pollution, glare, electrical safety, emergency lighting and listed buildings. Knowing the constraints from the outset will prevent compromised designs and potential costly remedial work later.

Additionally, he or she will have a toolbox of simple 'tricks', whereby striking lighting effects can be achieved without breaking the bank.
